Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical procedure done to treat periodontal disease. Although routine cleanings are done to prevent periodontal (gum) disease, this procedure – sometimes called a deep cleaning – is considered the “gold standard” of treatment for patients with chronic periodontitis.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN GETTING SCALING & ROOT PLANING
Just like it’s named, this deep cleaning has two parts.
Scaling: First we will remove all the plaque and tartar above and below your gum line, making sure to clean all the way down to the bottom of the pocket.
Root Planing: This step is the process of smoothing out your teeth roots to help your gums reattach to your teeth.
Scaling and root planing may take more than one visit to complete and may require a local anesthetic.
