Having a set of dentures can be life-changing. To have missing teeth and struggling with basic functions like eating and speaking as well as low self-image can take a serious toll on your mental and physical wellbeing.
At The Dental Lounge, we are proud of the number of lives we’ve been able to improve using dentures. Dentures can be a worthwhile investment, but it is important to be well versed in proper denture care in order to get the best use out of them.
Remove And Rinse After Eating
After each meal, remove your dentures and rinse them thoroughly (water is just fine for this). The purpose of this rinse is to get rid of any leftover food debris, preventing build-up on the dentures.
Brush Regularly
Just as with natural teeth, good oral hygiene is crucial in terms of denture care. You should brush your dentures at least daily, preferably twice a day. Speak to your dentist and ask for a recommendation for the best non-abrasive denture cleaner and brush to use on your dentures.
It is also important, even if you have no natural teeth, to brush your gums twice daily and use a good mouth rinse. Even without teeth, plaque and food debris can build up leading to infections or gum disease. You’ll also want to be cleaning your cheeks and palette to remove any remaining denture adhesive.
Soak Overnight
Soaking your dentures overnight helps to keep them moist, preserving the correct shape. Avoid boiling water on your dentures as the heat may cause them to warp or buckle. Soak dentures in water or mild denture-soaking solution overnight, being sure to check with your dentist for specific storage and soaking instructions first.
Handle Carefully
Dentures are strong, but not indestructible by any means. Take care not to drop them, especially when removing, cleaning or putting them to soak. Placing your dentures on a towel or leaving a washcloth in the sink in case you drop them while cleaning them can help prevent them from breaking by accident. When cleaning your dentures, take care not to bend or buckle the plastic or clasps.
Visit A Great Dentist
Visits to the dentist don’t stop after you have dentures. Just like natural teeth, dentures need to be checked regularly to ensure they are still in good condition. Additionally, you should go back to see your dentist if you are having any trouble with fit or discomfort.
