WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN GETTING AN EXTRACTION
An extraction is the process of removing a tooth. We take multiple steps and precautions to ensure the extraction is painless and easy for you. Initial Consult: During the consultation, we’ll ask for a thorough medical history as well as any medications that you are taking. Some people need to stop or start taking certain medications in the days leading up to the surgery, depending on the number of teeth, bone, or both to be removed. Getting you Comfortable: The first step in the actual procedure is a local anesthetic to numb the area and prevent teeth pain during the procedure. A local anesthetic will be administered to make you more comfortable. Extraction Procedure: Before starting we’ll take an X-ray of the tooth. This imaging will help us evaluate the curvature and angle of the tooth’s root. Once the local anesthetic has numbed the area, we’ll begin the extraction. If the tooth is concealed beneath gum tissue or bone, we may need to cut away the gum or remove the obstructing area of the bone. We also may remove the tooth in several pieces. Aftercare: The local anesthetic should only last for a few hours following an extraction. Once that wears off, over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen are enough to control the pain after a routine extraction. Your doctor will review any additional aftercare instructions with you based on your unique experience.
