If you know anyone who has worn traditional braces, you will know the frustration they have experienced with food and brace cleaning. They would have avoided many foods due to breakages and staining, as well as eating in public because of the volume of food sticking to their braces. The food trapped between brackets and under the wires would have required extensive cleaning, and that would have been complex as over-excessive cleaning can damage the braces.
Breathe a sigh of relief if you have chosen a clear aligner such as the industry-leading Invisalign aligners. Invisalign aligners are custom-made from a clear material that is comfortable to wear and makes small adjustments over time. With Invisalign, you can transform your smile in as little as six months. If you want to know how to clean your aligners, you will be happy to know it is much simpler than the cleaning of braces.
Aligners are taken out for eating and drinking (except if drinking water), so they do not get mucky like braces, and you don’t have to restrict your food choices! You must still, however, clean and sanitize them regularly, and our caring team of experts has put together some tips for you:
Removal And Rinsing
Each time you remove your aligners to or drink (except if drinking water), we recommend that they get a thorough rinse under cool or lukewarm water. Do not use hot water, or you will damage or warp the aligner.
By rinsing the aligner, you remove dried saliva and any plaque, which would have encouraged discoloration and bacterial growth. Your mouth harbors about 700 species of bacteria so rinse and clean your aligners regularly!
Soaking Clear Aligners
Soaking your aligners when they’re out of your mouth is a good cleansing option. Use an off-the-shelf denture cleaning solution or a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and warm water. Rinse the aligner after the soak and allow them to dry before using them.
Brushing And Flossing After Meals
Always brush and floss your teeth before putting on your aligner – not doing so can cause disease and decay. Brush, floss, and rinse all the removed debris thoroughly before reinserting your aligners.
Cleaning Aligner Trays
Your aligner tray should be cleaned at least once a day but twice a day is better. Use a dedicated, soft-bristled toothbrush with soap in a gentle, circular motion, taking care not to scrub hard or apply too much pressure. We recommend you avoid toothpaste as many brands of toothpaste are overly abrasive – any scratches or indents will harbor bacteria. Using the Invisalign Cleaning Crystals or special cleaning tablets is the best method of keeping clear aligners clean.
Remember to air-dry your aligner before reusing or before storing it, such as at mealtimes, because bacteria love moist environments. Use aligner storage containers that have vent holes to encourage airflow. Book Complimentary Consultation
