Perhaps it’s been a while since you’ve had a good cleaning and there is some build-up of plaque. In cases where the build-up is too great for us to complete a full oral exam, we’ll need to remove that build-up first. This is called a Full mouth Debridement
WHAT IS A FULL MOUTH DEBRIDEMENT?
A full mouth debridement is the removal of plaque and calculus that interfere with the ability of the dentist to perform a comprehensive oral evaluation. It’s basically the deepest clean you can get from your dentist.
WHAT DOES A FULL MOUTH DEBRIDEMENT DO?
When the buildup of tartar and hardened plaque is getting in the way of your dentist performing an oral exam, an ultrasonic device and scaling tools are used to create ultrasonic vibrations that remove years of buildup so that a full picture is available.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN GETTING A FULL MOUTH DEBRIDEMENT
This procedure is longer than regular dental cleanings and does require some preparation. In extensive cases, we may suggest the use of an anesthetic to ensure your comfort. During the procedure, we’ll use an ultrasonic device that combines streams of water and ultrasonic vibrations to loosen hardened tartar deposits, then we’ll use a handheld scaler to remove debris and clean below your gumline.
Most people think a full mouth debridement is a serious procedure, however, it is common and most patients tolerate it very well.
