Dental Implants

You’ve lost a tooth or maybe there wasn’t one there in the first place! Maybe decay took hold of your tooth, or you took a hit playing sports. It happens… and it may be time to consider a dental implant!

What Is An Implant?

Dental implants are basically artificial tooth roots that are shaped like screws and placed in your jawbone. They bond with your natural bone and become a sturdy base for supporting one or more artificial teeth, called crowns.

WHAT DOES AN IMPLANT DO?

Dental implants can be a smart choice when it comes time to replace a missing tooth or if you have had to have teeth removed due to injury, infection, or decay. Typically, dental implants are reserved for adults but may be a good choice for adolescents whose facial growth and development has been completed.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN GETTING AN IMPLANT

Dental implants are a procedure that requires replacing a missing tooth with an implant into the jaw bone, an abutment, and a crown. This procedure is comprised of multiple steps.

Initial X-Rays: Your dental professional will take an x-ray and discuss the various implant options and develop a plan for your implant surgery.
Dental Implant Placement: At this stage, we will place the dental implant in your jawbone where your tooth is missing. Most patients note that they experience less pain than they expected. We will use localized anesthesia to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Post-implant surgery discomfort is similar to that of any other dental surgery and is usually managed with over-the-counter pain medications.
Osseointegration: This is the stage where our implant and jawbone will grow together in a process called osseointegration. This process forms a strong foundation for your replacement teeth.
Abutment placement: Once your implant bonds with your jaw, an abutment is placed on the dental implant just above the gumline. This is a small connector and in some cases, the abutment can be placed at the same time as the implant.
Attach new teeth: After you’re all healed up, we will make impressions of your mouth and remaining teeth to custom-make your artificial teeth. Depending on your situation, these teeth can be an individual crown, implant-supported bridge, or dentures containing multiple replacement teeth – will be attached to the abutment.
