All You Need To Know About Sinus Lift And Dental Implants

Dental implants are a decidedly good option for anyone seeking a permanent tooth replacement solution. The Dental Lounge frequently helps patients with improving their smile and dental health, and we are committed to helping our patients understand every process throughout.

In short, dental implants involve surgically attaching a titanium post to the jaw bone which is then left to heal. After the healing period, a false tooth or crown is attached to the post, acting as a natural tooth and the root of the tooth respectively.

One of the main cautionary requirements is that you need to have enough healthy bone upon which to graft the titanium post. Patients who have suffered bone loss may need to undergo a sinus lift before they are eligible to receive dental implants. There is no need to be concerned or overwhelmed by a sinus lift & dental implants, it’s all much simpler than it sounds.

What Is A Sinus Lift?

In short, a sinus lift procedure, or sinus augmentation, is a procedure used to increase the amount of available bone on the top jaw. It is essentially a bone graft procedure that aims to grow bone in the floor of the sinus by adding bone to the space between your molars and premolars.

Who Would Need A Sinus Lift?

Many people opt for dental implants as a replacement for missing teeth. However, the procedure requires the patient to have a certain amount of bone mass to ensure successful implantation of the titanium post. Sometimes, due to trauma or periodontal disease, the patient doesn’t meet the minimum requirements of bone mass. In these cases, a sinus lift may be required in order to increase the amount of available, healthy bone into which titanium posts can be implanted.

What Is The Procedure For A Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift is, in essence, a bone transplant. There are many options for donor bones to be used in the procedure, including cadaver bone, a bone from a cow or a synthetic material.

The new bone is surgically attached to the natural jawbone beneath the gum after moving the sinus membrane upwards, filling part of the sinus cavity.

A full recovery from a sinus lift takes 4 to 6 months, after which you can begin the dental implant process.
